"CONTROVERSIAL" MISS MALAIKA

The ninth edition of the Miss Maliaka beauty pageant cruised to a successful conclusion at the Accra International conference Centre last Saturday but not bereft of controversy. Controversy arose after, Miss Gerry Partington, a 22 year old undergraduate of the University of Ghana, was the winner, contrary to the expectation of the audience that Ms Alexandra Ayirebi Acquah deserved the crown .After the first round of perfor mances, the 10 contestants were divided into two groups of five members each. This was used to envict five contestants, namely; Adwoa Ofori Afriyie, Mikafui Doe, Magdalene Ankrah, Priscilla Opoku Agyeman and Nana Konadu Agyeman Gyimah.
This, therefore, put the remaining five contestants Gerry Partington, Alexandra Ayirebi Acquah, Emmanuella Esinam Awunyo, Daisy Nana Adwoa Fofie and Smallie Debora Lomotey ] in the battle for the crown.But since beauty contests are not solely about beauty but intellect,the remaining contestants were each asked a question which drew funny anwers from some of the contestants. Nonetheless,Alexandra ‘s anwers impressed the audiences who immediately tipped her to win the crown. But that did not happen, as the judges [D-Black, Anne Sakyi and Kay Bentsi Enchill] declared both Alexandra and Gerry as winners, a development which called for a split between the two. A second question then posed, but which the audiences, again, responded in a way that Alexandra‘s anwer was more appropriate than Gerry. Regardless, Gerry was declared the winner, which was immediately met by protest from the shouting audiences. Alexandra was thus adjudged the first runner-up with Debora Lomotey as the second runner-up. Magdalene Ankrah and Emmanuella Esinam Awunyo picked the prizes for ‘Miss Congeniality’ and ‘Miss Talent,’ respectively.
For her prize, Gerry drove home a brand new kia salon car,an amount of GHC 6,000,a trip to Namibia, products from the sponsors and a year ‘s portfolio as a Malaria Ambassador. Musical performances were delivered by Sakodie, Stay J, R2Bees, Dr.Sid, Kesse, Emmanuel, Efyah and comedian Funny face.
